A Brief History of Stanfield General Baptist Church
The first decision to form a congregation and establish a church happened during a birthday dinner for Eva Hargraves'
father in 1929.  During the afternoon, family and friends began to sing hymns and two visiting ministers were asked to
preach.  Everyone was delighted with the spontaneous service and a suggestion was made to organize a church for
people in the surrounding area.

The first services were held in the homes of the ministers.  In the summer of 1930 a brush arbor was constructed which
served as a meeting place during the summer months.  The first revival was held in the brush arbor with J.P. Stanfield and
John Hargraves as the evangelists.  In winter, services were held in the Peanut School near the home of Jack Sullivan.

The first church conference was held on September 7, 1930.  Legal organization was established at this meeting.  Rev.
John Hargraves was elected as pastor, Earl Clark and J.D. Hargraves were appointed as deacons, and Pauline Hayes
was chosen as the clerk.

Soon after the conference, work began on a frame church with lumber supplied by the Keene and Sons Sawmill.  The
building, located 5 1/2 miles south of Gideon became known as "The Jog," because of its location at a jog in the road.

In 1948 the building was sold to Tatum Chapel and a new block building erected.  The church now had a sanctuary and
two classrooms.  However as farming practices changed, the congregation saw the need to move to a more centralized
location in town.  In 1965, after a storm damaged the church, the decision was made to build in the town of Gideon.
A parsonage was built in June of 1972 and a fellowship hall was added to the in 1974.

A Special Greeting From The Pastor and Congregation

We are glad that you stopped by to visit our website!
Of course we are glad for several reasons, but the biggest
reason is we can let you know how much God loves you and how He wants to spend eternity with you in
Heaven.  If you don't know Jesus as your personal Saviour, then we want to encourage you to ask Him into
your life right now.  Your salvation is one sincere prayer away!  You can receive Jesus by praying this prayer
sincerely from your heart - "Heavenly Father, I admit to you that I am a sinner in need of your grace.  I believe
that Jesus lived a sinless life on this earth, that He dies upon the cross for my sin, and that on the third day; He
arose and He lives with you in Heaven.  I want to commit my life to Jesus and ask him to save me and send
His Holy Spirit to live inside of me.
In Jesus Name I ask, Amen."

If you prayed this prayer, please let us know, and also find a good bible believing, teaching church
and let that pastor know that you have accepted the
Lord Jesus as your personal Saviour.
